Punjab’s Paddy Procurement Target at Risk as Yields Drop Sharply

Punjab’s plan to procure 175 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of paddy this season faces a setback as yields have dropped by 5–6 quintals per acre due to floods and continuous rains in late August and early September. According to reports, the average yield has fallen from 27–32 quintals per acre to 23–25 quintals, and only 21.05 LMT of paddy has reached mandis nearly a month into procurement. In several districts, especially Ropar and the flood-hit Majha region, yields have plummeted further to around 20 quintals per acre. Officials and market agents warn that the reduced output could impact farm incomes and rural liquidity, making it difficult for the state to meet its 175 LMT procurement target this year.
