Pre-monsoon activity intensifies in Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal; heavy rain alert in several districts

Pre-monsoon activity has picked up rapidly across eastern India, keeping weather conditions active in many parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Over the past 24 hours, moderate to heavy rainfall has been recorded in the foothill and interior regions of these states. Kolkata also witnessed intense showers, with Alipore and Dumdum observatories recording around 54 mm of rainfallclose to the monthly average. Meanwhile, Chaibasa in Jharkhand received 71 mm of rain. According to the weather department, this spell of rain is likely to continue for the next seven days. Several weather systems are contributing to this increased activity. A cyclonic circulation is present over southeast Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Bihar, while another system is active over northeast Bangladesh. A trough line connecting these two systems extends from Bihar through Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal to northeastern India. This setup is leading to continuous cloud formation and persistent rainfall. Under these conditions, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected in the foothill regions of Bihar, interior parts of Jharkhand, and southern areas of Gangetic West Bengal. Major cities like Patna, Ranchi, and Kolkata are also likely to be affected. There is a risk of lightning and strong winds, so residents are advised to stay cautious. However, the ongoing rain will bring a drop in daytime temperatures, providing relief from intense heat during the first week of May. Weather conditions are expected to improve from the beginning of the second half of May.
