Strong Surge in Maize Market: Prices Touch ₹3,200/Quintal as Poultry Buying Surges!

The domestic maize (corn) market is displaying a resilient yet split trend, with premium quality lots touching ₹3,200 per quintal. Rather than a uniform price surge across the board, market realizations are heavily driven by moisture levels, grain quality, and specific end-use demand. Key consuming hubs in Maharashtra and neighboring regions are witnessing strong procurement from feed and poultry industries for dry, high-grade corn, whereas high-moisture and average-quality lots continue to trade at lower price brackets. Underpinning this price strength is a projected sharp decline in total domestic production for the current season. Trade estimates suggest Indias maize output could drop by nearly 16.75% to around 232.09 lakh tonnes, while total acreage has contracted by 9.01% to approximately 89.06 lakh hectares. Significant output drops are expected in major growing statesspecifically Maharashtra (down 24.22%) and Karnataka (down 33.37%)raising concerns over tighter physical market supplies once the peak arrival phase subsides. Physical Mandi rates showcase clear quality premiums across key trading centers. In Maharashtra, top-quality maize fetched up to ₹3,200/quintal in Ahir, Poynad, and Munda, while Latur reported rates between ₹2,000 and ₹3,000, and Jalna traded at ₹2,300₹2,900. In Madhya Pradesh, Neemuch (Dhanuka quality) stood at ₹2,675 and Ratlam stock maize at ₹2,500₹2,550. Meanwhile, in Eastern Indias Gulabbagh (Bihar), medium quality maize hovered around ₹2,670₹2,720, with fine quality commanding ₹2,730₹2,800 per quintal. Market analysts indicate that maize prices are currently balancing two strong opposing forces. Lower national production forecasts alongside steady industrial demand from poultry, livestock feed, starch, and ethanol sectors are providing a solid price floor. However, incoming peak harvest arrivals and higher moisture content in new crop lots are keeping immediate upside moves capped. Farmers and traders are advised to focus on proper drying and storing of quality stocks while keeping a close watch on ground arrival trends in South and West India before making long-term holding decisions.
