Sowing of Rabi Crops Behind Last Year's Levels
According to recent reports, the sowing of rabi crops this year is lagging behind compared to the previous year. As of November 8, 2024, the total area under rabi crops has dropped to 14.606 million hectares, which is 7.4% lower than the 15.773 million hectares sown by the same period last year. Key Highlights: Wheat Area: The area under wheat cultivation stands at 4.13 million hectares, which is 10.4% less than last year's 4.887 million hectares. Wheat is the most important food grain crop for the rabi season, and this reduction in area may impact production. Mustard: The area under mustard cultivation has decreased by 1.6%, from 5.073 million hectares last year to 4.990 million hectares this year. Mustard is a key oilseed crop, and any decline in its sowing could affect oilseed production. Sorghum (Jowar): The area under sorghum (jowar) has dropped by 25%, from 0.893 million hectares last year to 0.669 million hectares this year. While sorghum is typically grown during the kharif season, some areas also sow it during the rabi season. The decline in sowing reflects stronger production during the kharif season. Maize and Lentils: The area under maize has increased by 50%, from 0.18 million hectares last year to 0.271 million hectares this year. Similarly, the area under lentils has increased by 11.2%, from 0.385 million hectares to 0.428 million hectares. Both crops have seen increased sowing in the rabi season, which is encouraging for the agricultural outlook. Rice (Rabi Rice): The area under rabi rice cultivation has seen a slight increase, rising from 0.699 million hectares last year to 0.704 million hectares this year. While the increase is small, it is significant as rabi rice is important for certain regions. Barley: The area under barley cultivation has shown a notable rise, from 27,000 hectares last year to 69,000 hectares this year. This growth is particularly seen in northern and western India. Government Production Targets: The Indian government has set the following production targets for the 2024-25 rabi season: Wheat: 115 million tons Rice: 14.55 million tons Maize: 12 million tons Chickpea: 13.65 million tons Lentils: 1.65 million tons Mustard: 13.8 million tons Barley: 2.25 million tons Although the overall area under rabi crops is slightly behind last year, the increase in maize, lentils, and rice sowing provides some optimism. The weather during the remainder of the rabi season will be crucial for crop yields. Favorable weather conditions could help meet production targets and support a strong harvest.
