Fine Rice Prices at Low Levels

This season, the production of Basmati rice varieties has increased, and the old stock is also piling up with traders and rice mills, which is preventing any significant price rise. Currently, the instability in the Gulf countries has reduced demand for exports, and the pressure of paddy in rice mills and markets is leading to fluctuations in the market. At present, 1509 Sela rice is being sold at ₹5200-5250 per quintal, and 1718 Sela rice is priced at ₹5300-5340 per quintal. However, there has been a ₹200-300 drop in the price of 1401 rice varieties over the past week. Still, after the current month, there is an expectation for better trade in rice. The situation for coarse rice is also stable, and there is no significant risk at the current prices. Traders are advised to be patient for a few more days, as international markets for coarse rice are showing higher prices. The government has announced the sale of 24 lakh tons of coarse rice at ₹2250 per quintal, and this stock has started selling, reducing sales in the open market. Additionally, government rice is being sold at very low prices in Haryana and Punjab, which has caused a slowdown in the market for coarse rice, including varieties like 100 Rice and IR-8. Although the market is not in a sharp decline now, it will take time for any price increases to materialize. In the fine rice segment, the lack of favorable demand from exporters has kept the market at lower levels, and this situation is expected to persist for a while.
