Maize Prices in Maharashtra Stable to Slightly Higher, Due to Delayed Harvest

Maize prices in Maharashtra were stable to slightly higher on Thursday. This was mainly because rain delays slowed down the harvesting process, which reduced the selling pressure. However, buying interest remained low. In major markets, prices stayed mostly the same, with a small rise of ₹10 per quintal in some areas. The warehouse price for new maize remained unchanged at 2240-2250 per quintal. Rain in many maize-growing areas has delayed the arrival of new crops, reducing the selling pressure. As a result, market experts believe that maize prices will stay stable in the short term due to limited sales. Currently, maize from Telangana is priced around 2400 per quintal (cleaned) in Sangli, while in Telanganas local markets, the price is about 2250 per quintal. Farmers in Telangana prefer to sell at 2,200 per quintal, even though there is limited government procurement at 2,225 per quintal. Despite more maize coming from Telangana, a big price drop of more than 20-40 per quintal is unlikely. This means that Maharashtras market will not face much pressure. In Bihar, maize prices are expected to drop by 150-200 per quintal due to increased supply. However, this won't affect Maharashtras markets much, as transport costs from Bihar to Maharashtra are around 300 per quintal. In Bihar, maize prices are expected to stay above 2,125-2,150 per quintal, limiting competition with Maharashtra. Looking ahead, maize prices in Maharashtra are expected to stay in a limited range, with prices possibly increasing towards the end of May as supplies from both Maharashtra and Telangana decrease. Prices in Bihar might also improve.
