Summer Sowing Sees Over 15% Growth in Rice, Pulses, Oilseeds, and Coarse Grains
India has recorded a significant surge in summer crop sowing this year. As of April 25, 2025, the total sowing area for rice, pulses, oilseeds, and coarse cereals has increased by 15.637%, reaching 73.08 lakh hectares, compared to 63.34 lakh hectares during the same period last year. Rice Cultivation Rice transplanting alone has grown significantly, covering 31.67 lakh hectares this summer, up from 27.64 lakh hectares in the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Pulses Sowing The sowing area for pulses has expanded to 19.80 lakh hectares, compared to 16.24 lakh hectares last year. Moong (Green gram): Sown in 16.55 lakh hectares, up from 13.42 lakh hectares. Urad (Black gram): Sown in 3.07 lakh hectares, up from 2.65 lakh hectares. Coarse Cereals Coarse grain sowing has reached 12.37 lakh hectares, compared to 10.62 lakh hectares last year. Maize: Sown in 7.50 lakh hectares (vs. 5.90 lakh ha last year) Bajra (Pearl millet): 4.22 lakh hectares (vs. 4.10 lakh ha) Jowar (Sorghum): 46,000 hectares Ragi (Finger millet): 16,000 hectares Oilseeds : Oilseed sowing has also seen modest growth, reaching 9.23 lakh hectares, up from 8.83 lakh hectares last year. Groundnut: 4.31 lakh hectares (vs. 4.11 lakh ha) Sesame (Til): 4.49 lakh hectares (vs. 4.33 lakh ha) Sunflower: 36,000 hectares (vs. 31,000 ha) The rise in summer sowing area reflects favorable weather conditions, timely harvesting of Rabi crops, and strong market demand. If the trend continues, it could boost overall agricultural output and provide much-needed support to the rural economy.
