Wheat Prices Fall Due to OMSS Scheme
On 9th January, wheat sale tenders under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) will be issued on the Value Junction portal. These sales will be conducted at a reserve price of INR 2,550 per quintal (excluding transportation costs). During November and December, around 5.3 lakh tonnes of wheat were allocated, while for 2026, a total of 30 lakh tonnes has been earmarked. However, of this allocation, actual offtake has remained weak. In the current season, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) is expected to sell about 20 lakh tonnes of wheat. Over the past two months, large quantities of wheat were transported from North India to South India, leading to a gradual reduction in wheat stocks in the northern region. Online portal stocks have also decreased. As of 1st January 2026, the FCI held 276.5 lakh tonnes of wheat, with government procurement for the next season set to begin from 1st April 2026. An increase in wheat production is expected in the Rabi 2026–27 season. The start of OMSS sales may exert some additional pressure on wheat prices in the short term.
