Wheat Exports Resume After 3 Years; 2.5 Million Tonnes Approved

After more than three years, the central government has lifted the ban on wheat exports. The government has approved the export of 2.5 million tonnes of wheat along with 0.5 million tonnes of wheat products. In addition, the government has permitted an extra 0.5 million tonnes of sugar exports, over and above the previously approved 1.5 million tonnes. It is noteworthy that this decision has been taken in view of better domestic production and strong government stock levels. India had imposed a ban on wheat exports on May 13, 2022. However, traders say that Indian wheat is currently expensive in the global market. International wheat prices are around $260-265 per tonne, whereas Indian wheat costs about $280-290 per tonne. The higher price is mainly due to India elevated Minimum Support Price (MSP). For the 2026-27 marketing year, the MSP for wheat has been fixed at ₹2,585 per quintal. Experts believe that exports will gain momentum only if domestic prices decline. It is estimated that wheat production in 2026-27 could exceed 118 million tonnes, which would be a record high.
