Northwest India Faces Western Disturbance, Southwest Monsoon Gains Momentum in South
According to the current weather systems across the country, conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance over the southern Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16. At present, a low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal remains active, with associated cyclonic circulation extending up to approximately 5.8 kilometers above sea level. Meanwhile, the western disturbance has moved from the Jammu region to affect Ladakh and surrounding areas. Cyclonic circulations are also active over south Haryana, northwest Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and southwest Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, one trough extends from southwest Madhya Pradesh to Manipur, passing through eastern Madhya Pradesh, south Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, and south Assam, while another trough stretches from southwest Madhya Pradesh to south interior Karnataka. In the next 24 hours, a new western disturbance may influence northwest India. In the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall occurred in Sikkim, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and south-central Maharashtra, with some areas experiencing heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds were reported in northeastern India, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Delhi-NCR, north Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh. Light to moderate rainfall was also observed in Kerala, Lakshadweep, Karnataka, southeast Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir. Severe heatwave conditions continued in western Rajasthan, while hot winds were experienced in parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Over the next 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy showers is likely in Sikkim, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Light to moderate rainfall may also occur over the western Himalayas, Bihar, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Andhra Pradesh. Dust storms, thunderstorms, and scattered rainfall are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and west Uttar Pradesh. Severe heatwave conditions may continue in western Rajasthan, while hot winds are likely in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
