Wheat Procurement Surpasses Last Years Level, Crosses 306 Lakh Tonnes
Government wheat procurement in the 2026-27 rabi marketing season has continued to remain strong. As of May 13, total wheat procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) stood at 306.12 lakh tonnes, which is 4.62% higher than the 292.60 lakh tonnes procured during the same period of the previous rabi season. The rising procurement figures indicate that the government is moving rapidly toward achieving its target this season. According to the Food Corporation of India (FCI), Punjab continues to lead in government wheat procurement this year as well. By May 13, the state had procured 121.62 lakh tonnes of wheat, compared to 118.17 lakh tonnes during the same period last year. Haryana has also exceeded its procurement target. So far, 80.93 lakh tonnes of wheat have been procured in the state against the target of 72 lakh tonnes. During the corresponding period last year, procurement in Haryana stood at 70.69 lakh tonnes. In Madhya Pradesh, government wheat procurement during the current season has reached 73.99 lakh tonnes, which is 4.82% lower than the 77.74 lakh tonnes procured during the same period last year. However, procurement activity in the state has accelerated during May. The central government has increased the states wheat procurement target from 78 lakh tonnes to 100 lakh tonnes. Farmers are also being provided a bonus in addition to the MSP of ₹2,585 per quintal. Wheat procurement in Uttar Pradesh has reached 12.08 lakh tonnes so far, while Rajasthan has recorded procurement of 16.64 lakh tonnes. Government procurement operations are also continuing in Bihar, Gujarat, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. This season, untimely rains and hailstorms caused damage to wheat crops in several regions. To provide relief to farmers, the central government relaxed quality norms in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan by increasing the permissible limit for luster loss to 70% and broken grains to 15%. The government has raised the wheat procurement target for the current 2026-27 rabi marketing season to 345 lakh tonnes, compared to the earlier target of 303 lakh tonnes.
