Pre-Monsoon Rain Still Delayed; Mumbai Faces Heat and Humidity
Mumbai is experiencing a longer-than-usual wait for pre-monsoon showers this year. So far, the city has seen rainfall only once, on the morning of May 31, 2026, when light showers occurred. Santacruz weather station recorded 9 mm of rainfall, but the showers did not reach the Colaba area in South Mumbai. Typically, before the onset of the southwest monsoon, Mumbai experiences good pre-monsoon rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds. However, this year such activity has not been as active as expected. According to meteorologists, a weather system developing over the Arabian Sea is currently hindering pre-monsoon rainfall over Mumbai and the Konkan region. A cyclonic circulation is active over the southeastern Arabian Sea, near the Kerala coast and the Lakshadweep area, preventing the rain from moving northwards. At present, most rainfall activity is limited to Kerala and nearby coastal areas. While this activity may extend to coastal Karnataka, it is unlikely to reach Goa and areas further north in the coming days. As a result, Mumbai and the entire Konkan region are likely to see only light and scattered rainfall over the weekend. Meanwhile, humid westerly winds from the sea are keeping the moisture levels high in the atmosphere. In the coming days, the citys maximum temperature is expected to hover around 35C, which, combined with high humidity, could increase discomfort for residents. Although Mumbais temperature is still below the official heatwave threshold of 37C, the combination of heat and high humidity is making the weather extremely uncomfortable. June heatwaves are rare in the city, with only a few exceptions like in 2014 and 2023. Residents should expect sticky and humid conditions for the next few days. The timing of the monsoons arrival in Mumbai remains uncertain. Experts say a clearer estimate can be made only after the monsoon reaches Kerala. Observations suggest that the monsoons northward progression could be slower than usual this year. Consequently, pre-monsoon humidity and sticky weather may persist in Mumbai for a few more days.
