Madhya Pradesh may fail to procure even 1,000 tn kharif jowar, bajra.

With the deadline for procurement approaching, Madhya Pradesh may fail to procure even 1,000 tn of jowar and bajra harvested in the 2019-20 (Jul-Jun) kharif season. So far, the state has procured just 653 tn of the crops. Owing to lower footfall of the farmers, the procurement is not expected to reach beyond 1,000 tn," the official said, adding that procurement of the coarse cereals was kicked off on Nov 15 and will end on Monday.

Turnout of farmers is low because prices of the commodities are hovering above the minimum support price level in key benchmark markets, traders said. The Centre has fixed a minimum support price of 2,550 rupees per 100 kg for hybrid jowar, and 2,000 rupees per 100 kg for bajra. The state agencies have bought 618 tn jowar from 164 growers and 35 tn bajra from 15 farmers. Around 8,225 jowar farmers and 22,895 growers registered for the procurement drive. Procurement is underway under the price support scheme in the state. Over 70 centres have been set up to carry out procurement under the scheme. The state is making the payments for the procurement directly in the bank accounts of registered farmers. Under the price support scheme, government agencies procure crops at the Centre-mandated minimum support prices to prop up falling prices in the domestic market.
