Black rice can also be exported

Manipuri Black Rice locally called Chak-Hao has been accorded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in the year 2020. Cultivation of black rice gained popularity in some districts in West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana apart from the northeastern states like Manipur and Assam. Black rice was cultivated under Akanksha district in Chandoli district of Uttar Pradesh. The government is providing assistance to the states for the cultivation of different types of rice under the National Food Security Mission (NFSM). This product is branded and sold in the market under the name 'Vindhya Black Rice'. Black rice varieties have export potential. But the department does not have any data on the export of black rice, according to APEDA, 110.98 lakh tonnes of non-basmati rice has been exported from India to major importing countries in the last year 2020-21.
