First Advance Estimate of Kharif Crop Production Released
After a long wait, the Ministry of Agriculture has finally released the first advance estimate of crops for the Kharif season of 2024-25. Compared to 2023-24, the production of some crops is expected to decrease, while the production of most crops is anticipated to increase. Figures May Vary in Future Estimates According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the production of rice in the Kharif season of 2024-25 is expected to rise from 1132.59 lakh tons in 2023-24 to 1199.34 lakh tons. Similarly, coarse grains are likely to increase from 355.35 lakh tons to 378.18 lakh tons. However, the production of pulses is expected to decline slightly, from 69.74 lakh tons to 69.54 lakh tons. Overall, the total foodgrain production is projected to increase by 89.37 lakh tons, from 1557.68 lakh tons in 2023-24 to 1647.05 lakh tons in 2024-25. Oilseed Crops Expected to Increase The production of Kharif oilseeds is also expected to rise, from 241.62 lakh tons in the previous year to 257.45 lakh tons in 2024-25. However, there is an expected significant drop in the production of commercial crops. Decline in Commercial Crop Production For commercial crops, sugarcane production is expected to decrease from 4531.58 lakh tons to 4399.30 lakh tons, a reduction of 132.28 lakh tons. Similarly, cotton production is forecasted to decline by 25.96 lakh bales, from 325.22 lakh bales to 299.26 lakh bales. Pulses Production Trends Among pulses, an increase in the production of tur (pigeon pea) and moong (green gram) is expected, while there is a significant decrease expected in the production of urad (black gram). Oilseeds and Other Crops In oilseeds, peanut (groundnut) and soybean production are likely to rise, while the production of castor is expected to fall. The production of mustard and sunflower is expected to remain stable. Coarse Grains Trends In coarse grains, maize (corn) and sorghum (jowar) are expected to show a significant increase in production, whereas the production of millet crops such as bajra, ragi, and small millets is expected to decrease.
