Due to lower-than-normal supply, cotton prices are expected to rise
Since the start of the 2024-25 season in October 2024, around 2.254 million bales have arrived in the market. The Ministry of Agriculture of India has released its first cotton crop estimate for the 2024-25 season at 29.926 million bales, approximately 9% lower than last year (a decrease of 2.5 million bales compared to the 32.522 million bales produced in the 2023-24 season). The Cotton Association of India has projected total cotton production for 2024-25 at 30.2 million bales, down from 32.5 million bales last year. Imports for the 2024-25 season are expected to rise by 42% year-on-year due to lower production. On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), cotton prices are expected to remain between ₹55,500 and ₹57,500, while April 2025 cotton futures may range between ₹1,530 and ₹1,600. Cottonseed oilcake (cocud) prices are estimated to range between ₹2,940 and ₹3,010.
